Riding bikes, scooters and skateboards

Riding your bike or skateboard can be very dangerous. Each year, too many children in New South Wales aged 8-10 are seriously injured riding their bike.

The most important rule for riding your bike is that you must wear a helmet, and strap it up properly.

Riding on footpaths

Children under 12 years and older riders accompanying them may ride a bike on the footpath, but they must keep to the left and give way to pedestrians.

Skateboards and rollerblades

You may use skateboards or rollerblades on the footpath, unless a sign says that you can’t. It doesn’t matter how old you are.

Scooters

Anyone under 12 years may ride a scooter on the footpath, unless a sign says that you can’t.

Pedestrians

It is also dangerous crossing the road, especially if you are not careful. In 2004, for example, 74 pedestrians aged 8-10 were seriously injured in New South Wales.

Let’s find out

  • In class, discuss what is a safe way to cross the road.
